At the November 13th meeting, Lou Ferland ably delivered the invocation in Rev. Allen's absence. (Father Allen had a previous obligation and arrived late.)

President Tricia welcomed the club’s guests, including Joan Rice.  Joan is on temporary log-editing duty and her behind-the-scenes service to the club is much appreciated.  (Thank you! Ed.)

Barry Kidd, the lead carpenter on the Puddle Dock Pond skating rink project, provided a construction update.  Over 6000 feet of board have been laid for the Rink.  Rotarians have given 250 man hours to the project and Barry thanked the Rotarians who have helped.

Priscilla MacInnis updated the club on the Thanksgiving meal at the Jarvis Center.  Three members volunteered to fill the remaining turkey cooking slots (or volunteered their mother, in John Lyon’s case).  Turkeys will be given out at next week’s meeting with thermometers and instructions.  We still need more pies and on-site volunteers.

President-elect Bill Hurley laid out the schedule for Christmas tree sales and deliveries.  The club needs all the able-bodied volunteers they can get to unload trees and set up the trailer and lights.

Deb Grabowski asked anyone who plans to attend the Senior Christmas Lunch on December 4th to RSVP to her.  The event has become increasingly popular, and there is a waiting list for seniors this year.

Lou Ferland made the last announcement for PMAC “Behind the Business.”  PMAC will be hosting Rotarians for a private, behind-the-scenes tour on November 19th at 5:15 PM.

Tony Delyani provided a gentle reminder regarding the attendance policy.  In every six-month period, members must attend 30% of the meetings held here at the Rotary Club of Portsmouth.  We must also attend 50% of that number of meetings via attendance or make-ups.

Shari Donnermeyer introduced the guest speaker, Valerie Rochon, the Tourism Manager for the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce.  Valerie has been with the Portsmouth Chamber for about four years.  Before that, she was with the Stowe Area Chamber of Commerce in Vermont.

Valerie spoke to the club about “Marketing the Destination".  The first step is determining our unique selling proposition, or “USP.”  For Portsmouth, that means our maritime heritage, arts culture and outdoor activities. It also includes what the New York Times calls our “absurd selection” of restaurants.  Valerie urged members to check out two of Portsmouth’s hotel properties. One is the newly constructed Hampton Inn and the other is the spectacularly renovated Hotel Portsmouth.  Hotel occupancy rates in Portsmouth have risen from 76% in 2012 to a whopping 85% in 2014.

One Chamber mission brings together industry segments (e.g. dining, retail) so that they can develop mutually beneficial strategies.  Valerie referred to the old adage that “a rising tide floats all boats.”  This cooperation has resulted in successful events such as Restaurant Week.  The Chamber will be launching a new tourism website soon.  Portsmouth will be featured in upcoming issues of Travel & Leisure, Coastal Living, and Every Day with Rachael Ray. (Rachael will not personally be here, despite rumors to the contrary).

During the meeting, the holiday spirit was visible among many Rotarians:
